Air France was founded on 7 October 1933 by the merger of Air Orient, Air Union, Compagnie Générale Aéropostale, and Société de Transport Aérien Intercontinentaux. The newly created airline was a result of the French government’s desire to create a national air carrier capable of competing with Deutsche Luft Hansa, Iberia, and British Airways. On 29 July 1945, the company was renamed “Airlines Nationales Françaises” (ANF).
Air France began operations on 7 October 1933 with a fleet of five Savoia-Marchetti S.73 seaplanes carrying 18 passengers from Paris to Marseille. By 1939, Air France operated 38 aircraft. Between 1939 and 1945, the airline transported 1 million passengers and 270,000 tons of cargo.
